Our Mission

We empower foster youth and foster families in our community through support, wellness, and life-skills programs that build self-sufficiency and stronger communities. We advance this mission through culturally responsive , trauma informed programs that strengthen identity, belonging, wellness and opportunities for youth impacted by the foster care system and underserved communities.

"Redefining foster care—one caregiver at a time."

Our Vision

We envision a world where caregivers are honored, equipped, and supported, so every child grows up surrounded by stability, love, and opportunity.

Our Purpose

We  exists to uplift the caregivers who hold families together.Through guidance, advocacy, and connection, we strengthen the support systems that make healing possible—for children, parents, and entire communities.

Our Story

Family Onward was born from our own lived experience—as mothers, caregivers, and community builders. Founded by Bre Thompkins and Dejah Irby our journey through foster care was full of both love and challenges. From navigating false allegations to raising youth with complex needs and little support, we experienced firsthand how isolating—and transformative—this path can be.

What changed everything for us was a relationship with one of our children’s biological parents. Instead of division, we found healing through connection. That collaboration showed us what was possible when caregivers, bio families, and community members work with one another instead of against one another. That’s why we created Family Onward: to build a supportive network where caregivers are no longer left to carry the weight alone, and where families—regardless of system involvement—can access the tools they need to thrive.

We now offer low-cost workshops, peer mentorship, support groups, employment guidance, and growth opportunities for community members especially youth and adults navigating foster care, reentry, or family reunification. Our goal is simple: to create the kind of community we needed but couldn’t find—one that empowers caregivers, uplifts families, and helps every child feel the ripple effects of stability and care.
