ABOUT US

Our Mission
Family Onward is dedicated to reshaping the foster care experience by strengthening families, empowering caregivers, youth, and biological parents with the tools, guidance, and reunification support needed to create nurturing environments where children can thrive and help youth break cycles of justice involvement so they might move toward a brighter, more connected future.
Our Vision
We want to reshape the foster care experience by building a world where caregivers are honored, equipped, and supported—so every child grows up surrounded by stability, love, and a resilient family.
Our Purpose
Family Onward exists to uplift the caregivers who hold families together. Through guidance, advocacy, and connection, we strengthen the support systems that make healing possible—for children, parents, and entire communities.
Our Story
Family Onward was born from our own lived experience—as mothers, caregivers, and community builders. Founded by Bre Thompkins and Dejah Irby our journey through foster care was full of both love and challenges. From navigating false allegations to raising youth with complex needs and little support, we experienced firsthand how isolating—and transformative—this path can be.

What changed everything for us was a relationship with one of our children’s biological parents. Instead of division, we found healing through connection. That collaboration showed us what was possible when caregivers, bio families, and community members work with one another instead of against one another.
That’s why we created Family Onward: to build a supportive network where caregivers are no longer left to carry the weight alone, and where families—regardless of system involvement—can access the tools they need to thrive.

We now offer low-cost workshops, peer mentorship, support groups, employment guidance, and growth opportunities for community members especially youth and adults navigating foster care, reentry, or family reunification. Our goal is simple: to create the kind of community we needed but couldn’t find—one that empowers caregivers, uplifts families, and helps every child feel the ripple effects of stability and care.

Oshelyn Sanchez, Former Foster Youth
I started living with Ms. Bre two weeks shy of turning 18. She took me in on the edge of being an adult which I appreciated because I know placement for teens is difficult. No-one else was willing to take a chance on me and my sister but she gave us one and her family always accepted us as their own. She has shown me nothing but love and I'm grateful.

Darius Hawkins, Former Foster Youth
I grew up in foster care under the roof of Ms. Bre. She took me in at a crucial time in my life and saved me from the group home struggle. I was 16 when I went to live with her and it was nothing but a family full of love from that day forward. I gained more than her I gained an enitre family and I am a better person because of them.

Vinshayae Sanders, Former Foster Youth
I am 19 years old. I’m a former foster youth and I have been with my foster mom Bre for 5 years. Being with her has taught me a lot in life she has really opened up to me and welcomed me in her home and we have built a strong bond. She is such a great support system that I have and very honest when it comes to her opinions. She is always there when I need her. When I was 17 years old she was there at the hospital with me when I had my first daughter. Supporting me teaching me breathing techniques making sure I have all my necessities and also made sure I was comfortable along the way. I have made a lot of mistakes in life and she has gave me many chances and accepted me for who I am. It helped me to better myself and I honestly appreciate her for that.
